Provides overall technical and administrative management such as policy development and budgeting for a clinical laboratory operation. Supervises and coordinates activities of laboratory technical and ancillary staff. Functional areas may include microbiology, histology, pathology, chemistry, hematology and related support services.
Essential Functions: Utilizes Quality Management principles to ensure that all phases of laboratory testing are efficient and meet the service needs of the patients and health care providers. The Assistant Manager demonstrates self-direction and professionalism by: identifying areas of skill, knowledge and weakness; participation in educational activities; using the expertise of the laboratory management and medical staff in dealing with problems; participation in meetings; and being reliable and accountable on scheduled work days. The Assistant Manager is expected to set the example by conducting their business affairs consistent with the highest ethical and legal standards. In coordination with the Director, must ensure that staff has the tools to perform assigned tasks according to applicable laws, rules, regulations, and policies.
The Assistant Manager serves as a leader for the laboratory staff and coordinator of laboratory activities, and is in charge of operations in the absence of the Laboratory Administrative Director. May be involved with physicians and other health care professionals in problem solving laboratory issues. Other job dimensions include: utilizing, evaluating and developing laboratory processes; maintaining competency in technical skills; identifying and implementing patient and clinician educational needs; observing and documenting pertinent information; performing staff performance appraisals; identifying and protecting patient rights; supporting service excellence programs; ensuring environmental safety; responding competently in emergency situations; serving as a professional role model; actively pursuing educational opportunities; promoting staff development; developing effective working relationships; assisting with identification of laboratory staffing needs; and delegating lab duties.

Blood Borne Pathogen Category: III - May have exposure to blood-borne pathogens during performance of their job.
Five years Medical Technologist experience to include 2 years of supervisory or similar leadership experience.
Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university including courses in biological science, chemistry, and mathematics, medical technology or clinical laboratory science.
MT (ASCP), CLS (NCA) or MLS (ASCP).
