Position Summary
The Charging Specialist is responsible for assuring charging is accurate and represents the documentation provided and is in accordance with regulatory requirements.  By abstracting information from the patient’s medical record the Charging Specialist is able to assign accurate charges for all patient care activities.  The Charging Specialist serves as a coaching resource to nursing staff, physicians and clinical management. Work situations are routine and require a service-oriented individual, with skills in problem resolution, accuracy, organization, and attention to detail.  Internal contacts include Patient Accounts & Access, Coding, Nursing staff, Physicians, and Clinical Management.  This is an intermediate level position working under the supervision of the CDM & Charge Capture Manager. Decision-making is required within the scope of the position responsibilities.  Major decisions may be subject to review and approval.

Minimum Requirements/Education/Licenses/Certifications
Associates degree required, with a concentration in accounting, finance or other related field highly preferred

OR

3-5 years  of recent, relevant healthcare experience in progressively more responsible positions may be substituted for education requirements

Experience reading and interpreting medical documentation

Certified Coding Specialist Professional (CCSP) preferred
